The Ashmolean Museum treasures seven important sheets by Leonardo da Vinci in its drawings collection. They vary in theme, technique, medium and size, providing very rich insights into Leonardo’s artistic practice and intellectual interests, as well as into the practice of collectors. The Ashmolean additionally holds drawings by Leonardo’s assistants and followers, two of which are large-scale drawings (cartoons) directly copied from his originals. There are also drawings by Raphael and by Michelangelo recording motifs from Leonardo’s works, and drawings by remote followers which testify to the long-lasting reception of his legacy in eighteenth-century France.
This guided viewing will centre on Leonardo’s drawings, his artistic practice, new ideas on invention and reception of his works. From a close examination of his drawings, we will gradually expand our approach by considering relationships with his paintings and writings. We will also discuss his impact on contemporary and later artists.
Please note: this event will close for enrolments at 23:59 GMT on 1 November 2026.
