Leonardo invented new drawing techniques which not only revolutionalised artistic practice and working methods, but also transformed the status of drawing itself.
Through a careful selection of drawings by Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo treasured in the Ashmolean Museum, this guided viewing examines the innovations introduced by Leonardo and the extent to which Raphael and Michelangelo were inspired by Leonardo’s new methods in their own ways.
Covering different themes, projects and moments of Raphael’s and Michelangelo’s productions, we will discuss their traditional workshop training, analyse their drawing tools, materials and techniques, and compare them to Leonardo’s innovative draughtsmanship. Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo could not be less alike in temperament and artistic personality, but they all developed a freedom and spontaneity in conveying their ideas on paper that changed both the means and ends of drawings.
Please note: this event closes for enrolment at 23:59 GMT on 29 November 2026.
