Delve into Alexander the Great's legacy, a multifaceted and far-reaching phenomenon that has significantly influenced world history.
His military conquests were unparalleled. In just over a decade, he built an empire that stretched from Greece to India, disseminating Greek culture across vast regions. Greek art and architecture influenced local cultures, and Greek became a lingua franca in the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
Politically, his empire-building set a precedent for future conquerors, and his administrative methods were emulated in subsequent empires. His exploits were so extraordinary that for centuries after his death, the Greek ruler seemed a figure more of legend than of history.
Drawing on documentary sources, art, and archaeological findings, this in-person day event will offer a glimpse into Alexander’s legacy as we observe how his empire spread Greek influence across Asia and Africa and fused diverse cultures into a Hellenistic world. We will also explore the far-reaching impact of these military, political, and cultural achievements on world civilisation and politics.

Dr Aphrodite Papayianni – Tutor
Aphrodite Papayianni holds a PhD in Byzantine History and teaches at the University of London and OUDCE. In the last ten years, she has enjoyed spells as a Visiting Professor in the Universities of Yeditepe and Sakarya (Turkey), and the North-East Normal University, Changchun Normal University and Hebei Normal University (China). Through the years, Aphrodite has developed a wide teaching portfolio, from Greek Prehistory to the end of Byzantium, and has published articles in various topics of Ancient Greek, Byzantine, post-Byzantine, and Crusade History.
