Dr Charles Boyle

Assistant Director (Professional and Open Access Courses)

Charles Boyle, MA, PGDipEd, PGCert Russian (Glas), PGCE (St Andrew’s College), MSc (Aston), MBA (UNE), MA (Lanc), PhD (NDU, Budapest), PGDipLATHE (Oxf), MSc (Edin), is Assistant Director of Professional and Open Access. His work focuses on the design, development and delivery of professional and continuing education for adult learners, with particular expertise in business, management, technology, AI and digital education.

He leads the Department’s portfolio of professional and open-access provision, including summer schools, bespoke short CPD courses, and directs the Foundations of Diplomacy pre-Master’s course. He also works with Oxford University Press on international education initiatives, including the Oxford Teachers’ Academy professional development programmes for English language teachers and the Oxford Test of English suite of online language proficiency assessments.

Charles has extensive international experience in language education, teacher development and course design. He has taught English to international students, trained language teachers and delivered presentations and professional development internationally on course design, language assessment and pedagogy. He has worked across Europe and the Middle East, and has undertaken consultancy and training projects for the UK Ministry of Defence, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the British Council and NATO.

He has authored teacher resources for the award-winning Campaign: English for the Military series (Macmillan, 2005–2006) and co-authored English for Law Enforcement (Macmillan, 2009), winner of the David Riley Award for Innovation in Business English and ESP.

His current work explores adult learning in digital environments, with a particular focus on accessibility and inclusive pedagogy. He is interested in how flexible approaches to teaching and learning, scaffolded support and adaptive technologies can enable diverse adult learners to develop digital confidence, autonomy and engagement.

Charles holds a PGDip in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (Distinction) from the University of Oxford and an MSc in Digital Education (Distinction) from the University of Edinburgh. He is a Fellow of Kellogg College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
