Banbury and its immediate environs have seen a large amount of development recent years. This has led to a great deal of archaeological work taking place, in an area which had previously been little explored, and which was not well-known for its archaeology. The results have been transformative. A rich archaeological landscape has been found. This includes Neolithic and Bronze Age ceremonial and funerary monuments, Neolithic settlement sites, numerous Iron Age and Roman farming settlements, and evidence of Anglo-Saxon settlement and a cemetery of the same date.
This day will bring together a number of presenters who have been directly involved in these new discoveries. They will highlight and describe some of the most important sites, and seek to set these in their wider archaeological context. The aim will be to show how large-scale development-led investigations in a new area, away from the traditional Oxfordshire focus on the Thames valley, have radically changed our understanding of the archaeology of Banbury and its surroundings.

Mr Roger Thomas – Speaker and Chair
Roger Thomas is an archaeologist who spent most of his career working for English Heritage (now Historic England). He is now an Honorary Research Associate in the School of Archaeology, University of Oxford. He is also a barrister. He teaches regularly for the Department for Continuing Education.
