Dr Sepideh (Sepi) Chakaveh, Lecturer in Data Science at Oxford Lifelong Learning, Research Member of Wolfson College, University of Oxford, and Founder of PixselChat, will speak at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 4 March 2026.
Mobile World Congress is one of the world’s leading global technology events, bringing together industry leaders, researchers and policymakers shaping the future of mobile communications, AI and digital infrastructure. Sepi will join speakers presenting new technologies, including her groundbreaking AI communication tool, PixselChat.
PixselChat is a secure communication platform that allows people to speak in 70 different languages and understand each other instantly across text, audio and video. The system automatically detects the language being used and translates it into the user’s chosen language in real time. Unlike many existing platforms, PixselChat does not store messages in the cloud. Instead, it can run on private servers or secure networks, helping organisations keep their communications confidential. Its mobile and web applications work in the same way, allowing people to communicate easily across devices, paving the way for one of the first-ever sovereign AI telecommunication systems to be developed.
In her talk, Sepi will explore the limitations of many current translation and communication tools. She argues that while these systems offer translation features, they often rely on older technical structures that were not designed with privacy or seamless multilingual communication in mind. As a result, organisations may face security risks, limited functionality, or barriers when communicating across languages and platforms. As she explains:
“The problem is that privacy and security are still treated as features that can be added later. If communication systems are built on architectures that route and store content elsewhere, no amount of local translation can undo that. These principles have to be designed in from the start.”
Alongside her research and entrepreneurial work, Sepi is Course Director for the Undergraduate Advanced Diploma in IT Systems Analysis and Design at Oxford Lifelong Learning, where she teaches professionals how digital systems are structured, analysed and designed.
This work is reflected in the development of PixselChat, which has recently reached an important milestone following eight months of testing PixselChat Lounge, with hundreds of users across four continents and 19 languages. The platform is now being prepared for wider use, including integration into telecom networks and digital communication services, marking the next step towards making real-time multilingual communication more widely available.
