Applying for a research degree

Applying for a part-time research degree

If you are interested in undertaking a research degree at Oxford Lifelong Learning, we strongly recommend that you contact the Director of Studies or Programme Director to discuss your plans, objectives and research interests before you submit a formal application. This will enable you to fine-tune your proposed research project, check that a suitable supervisor can be identified and clarify the entry requirements for the programme.

For subjects not related to our existing DPhils, we suggest that you contact a University lecturer at the Department with relevant interests. It is advisable that a supervisor is identified before your application is submitted.

All DPhil applicants are required to submit a preliminary research proposal with their application. The purpose of the proposal is to demonstrate that the research topic you propose to undertake is significant, necessary and feasible, that you will be able to make an original contribution to the field, and that the project can be completed within the expected time period.

Full details of the application process and the supporting materials required are provided in the University of Oxford Graduate Admissions Application Guide.
