Lecture by Professor Sandie Byrne
This talk will consider the origins and mysteries of Heathcliff, and will contend that though he is villainous, in some ways he represents the moral centre of the story. We shall consider the complex parallels and doublings of the characters and plot, and the difference between the chronological events and the order in which we receive them when reading. We shall touch on the implications of Charlotte Brontë’s preface to her sister’s novel, and, examine the most ambiguous of the endings. In question time, students will be invited to offer their own assessments of the Brontës’ achievements and why they are still read around 180 years after their publication.
This lecture is part of The Brontës Fiction lecture series, taking place on Wednesdays from 10 March to 14 April 2027. You may either register for individual lectures or the entire lecture series at a reduced price.

Prof Sandie Byrne
Sandie Byrne is Associate Professor of English Literature and Director of Studies in English, OUDCE and a Fellow of Kellogg College, Oxford. She is the author of a number of books and articles on nineteenth- and twentieth-century writing.
