Philip Stack

After studying some short online courses, Philip enrolled on the Diploma in Archaeology to enhance his engagement with archaeological evidence and site visits.

'I live in Bath and have recently retired after many years living in Belgium. I started by studying some of the short online courses offered by Oxford Lifelong Learning (such as ‘Vikings – Raiders, Traders and Settlers’) and then carried on with longer certificate-level distance learning courses offered by another university. Returning to the UK gave me the chance to study in-person with a group of highly motivated fellow students and to use the outstanding library facilities so I was delighted to get a place on the Diploma course.

'The teaching over the last two years has been excellent, and my knowledge and ability to critically read and engage with the archaeological literature has improved substantially. All the staff are very supportive and committed to assisting us with the course. The practical work has been very well integrated. The human remains workshops were a highlight, superbly taught and enabling us to write an osteology report as a follow-up.

'The course does require a significant commitment to get the most out of it, and good time management and forward planning are needed. I am certain that the Diploma in Archaeology will open doors for all students, whether they aim to develop a new career or just wish to gain a better understanding of the subject to enhance their visits to museums and archaeological sites.'
