Poppy Williams
After completing our short online course in Minoans and Mycenaeans over the summer, student Poppy had her course essay published in the University of Edinburgh's Retrospect Journal HCA.
'Retrospect Journal is a student journal at the University of Edinburgh, so I first had to apply for the columnist position. Once I was accepted, I submitted my online course piece on the structural remains of Mycenae to the editors and it was published in the journal!
'Before enrolling on the Minoans and Mycenaeans online course, I was finishing off my second year at the University of Edinburgh and began working full-time, looking for ways to continue my studies over the summer.
'I chose this course to increase my knowledge of Ancient Greek history because I have thus far been more focused on Roman history. Additionally, this course had more of an archaeological focus which I had never previously encountered, so I was able to gain an insight into this field of study and writing.
'I found the discussions with my peers and tutor the most rewarding. Everyone was incredibly encouraging and engaged with what each other had to say. It felt like a real community of like-minded people where you weren’t afraid to ask anything.
'Since the programme, I have begun my third year of university, studying plenty more ancient and medieval history, alongside the Latin language. In the future, I hope to pursue a masters' degree in Classics and Ancient History, therefore I intend to write and publish throughout the rest of my undergraduate degree to increase my skills.
'If you have the means to study with Oxford Lifelong Learning, do it! As a university student passionate about pursuing an academic career, the ability to continue my studies with little pressure throughout the summer allowed me to enjoy and engage with the work far more.'
