Walking tour, lunch and lecture by Jess Worth
Oxford University is well known as a bastion of tradition and training ground for future Prime Ministers, but how much do you know about the city’s radical past and present?
On the morning walking tour you will hear about epic ‘town vs gown’ riots, fiercely independent medieval women, determined but doomed Levellers, acid-sprinkling Suffragettes, pioneering Black students and the locals who kicked fascists out of the city for good. From Oscar Wilde to Rhodes Must Fall, the Radical Oxford tour tells the fascinating and inspiring stories of those who have pushed back against power, privilege, discrimination and inequality throughout Oxford’s 1300-year history.
In the afternoon lecture, we will expand on the themes of the tour and explore how and why radicals of all types have changed Oxford over the centuries.
Jess Worth is a local historian and Oxford Green Badge tour guide (aka Lady Gargoyle Tours) with a background in campaigning, activism and progressive journalism.

Jess Worth
Jess Worth is an award-winning Green Badge Oxford tour guide and local historian, but before that she spent 25 years as a campaigner and activist on social and environmental justice issues. So when she started diving deeply into the history of Oxford she naturally sought out the rebels, radicals and revolutionaries whose stories are seldom remembered here. She is a proud ‘townie’ and loves bringing to life the social, political and imaginative role that Oxford has played in the history of Britain, and the world.
