The Ashmolean Museum treasures one of the most important collections of Raphael’s drawings. They vary in theme, technique, medium and size, providing rich insights into his artistic practice and working methods. Raphael executed drawings as preparatory for his paintings, exploring initial ideas in quick preliminary sketches that he gradually developed into studies of the highest level of finish and perfection. In addition, his drawings were used in his workshop as references for assistants to carry out his commissions, or as designs to be engraved and circulated to a wider audience.
This guided viewing will centre on twelve of Raphael’s drawings. It will discuss his artistic practice, new drawing techniques and relationships with his own paintings, spanning early studies from his formative years in Umbria to drawings made in Florence and in his mature years in Rome. They will include studies for the Baronci Altarpiece (Naples), for his famous Entombment (Rome) and for Virgin and Child compositions, as well as a self-portrait and drawings for the Stanze (Rome) and the Transfiguration (Rome). The examination of his drawings will be adopted mainly chronologically to facilitate our appreciation of both changes and continuities in his technique and drawing style.

Dr Juliana Barone
Juliana Barone is a Leonardo da Vinci specialist. She was awarded her Doctorate at Trinity College, Oxford University, had a Junior Research Fellowship at St John’s College, Oxford University, and is both Research Fellow at the Warburg Institute and Honorary Research Fellow at Birkbeck College, University of London. She has published extensively on Renaissance art and theory, and in particular on Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings, paintings and notebooks. She has taught at Oxford University, Birkbeck College, and the Biblioteca Leonardiana (Vinci). She has also curated exhibitions in London, Milan and Florence.
