An introduction to the process of recording archaeological sites prior to excavation. Through lectures and site visits, we class will go through the fundamentals of site recording emphasising simple measurement techniques.
While there is new and scientifically advanced survey equipment available to the professional archaeologist, there is also a suite of simpler and cheaper methods of site measurement available, as well as free to use sources of survey data. We will explore the history and results of different site recording techniques, including the most up to date methods. You will be given guidance on how to select the appropriate technique for the type of site, information desired and general budget.
The course is seminar and field practical based. You will be introduced to basic surveying techniques in two outdoor seminar sessions, and learn how to illustrate your measurements and present your findings in written form.
The course is suitable for those with some field experience, as well as those who are interested in practical archaeology.
This course is part of the Oxford University Summer School for Adults (OUSSA) programme.
