Seminars
Monday
Finding Ideas/The Spark of the Story
Today, we will explore how to find inspiration in everyday life and in our own lived experiences. Using archive photographs, audio material, and mixed-media texts as creative prompts, we will experiment with short writing exercises designed to develop our individual 'way of looking' at the world. Discussion will focus on how these methods can spark original ideas and help shape works in progress, encouraging each writer to cultivate their own authentic creative perspective.
Tuesday
Complex Characterisation/People of the Story
Tuesday’s seminars will focus on bringing story ideas to life through the creation of engaging, psychologically complex characters. Through a combination of text analysis and writing exercises, we will examine how to use action, dialogue, and interior thought to reveal character. You will consider both heroes and anti-heroes, exploring the relationship between character and plot, and discussing how to surprise and delight readers by subverting archetypes and playing with expectations.
Wednesday
Structure and Setting/The World of the Story
Today, we will turn our attention to structure and setting, using a range of texts and visual materials to explore how place and landscape can shape narrative. We will discuss how setting can serve as an insight into character, a means of advancing plot, or even as a character in its own right. The seminars will include practical exercises to experiment with different plot structures and techniques for building original, character-driven stories that feature compelling twists and turns.
Thursday
Genre/What Kind of Story?
Thursday’s seminars will explore the appeal and function of genre within contemporary fiction. Drawing on text analysis, historical sources, and visual prompts, we will discuss why certain types of stories have enduring universal appeal and how we can use these conventions to our advantage while remaining true to our own creative voices. The seminars will also address the relationship between genre and theme, considering how to play with and subvert expectations in both areas to produce original, resonant fiction.
Friday
Editing and Voice/Your Story and Your Voice
Our final seminars focus on refining your work and finding your unique voice. Through text analysis and writing exercises, we will explore narrative point of view and experiment with identifying the most effective perspective for your story. We will also consider how metaphor and language choices help express your distinct 'way of looking'.
Today, we will highlight the creative benefits of learning the rules of writing before breaking them with purpose. Finally, we will discuss the editing and publishing process, using professional industry resources to understand how to prepare your work for submission and reach a wider readership.
