Daily schedule
After registration on Sunday afternoon, we invite you to a welcome meeting in the Amersi Lecture Theatre in New Quad, where you will meet your tutors. Join us in Deer Park afterwards for our opening drinks reception, followed by dinner in Brasenose’s historic dining hall (informal dress).
Seminars take place on weekday mornings. Most afternoons are free, allowing you time to explore Oxford, enjoy a variety of optional social events (see details below), or to sit back and relax in one of the college's atmospheric quads.
Your course culminates on Friday evening with a closing drinks reception and gala farewell dinner at which Certificates of Attendance are awarded. For this special occasion smart dress is encouraged (no requirement to wear dinner suits or gowns).
Social programme
We warmly invite all Inspiring Oxford students to take part in our optional social programme, with all events provided at no additional cost. Events are likely to include:
- Croquet on the quad
- Chauffeured punting from Magdalen Bridge
- Expert-led walking tours of Oxford
- Optional visit to an Oxford Library or the Ashmolean Museum
- River Thames afternoon cruise
- Quiz night in the college bar
- Scottish country dance evening (where you do the dancing!)
Seminars
Monday
Prose Poetry
As Pulitzer Prize winning poet Charles Simic observed, 'It may look like prose, but it acts like a poem'. We will explore how prose poetry blurs the boundaries between genres, using imagery, rhythm and language to create poetic intensity without relying on line breaks.
Tuesday
Flash Fiction
Can a complete story be told in just 250, 500, or 1,000 words? We will examine how flash fiction compresses plot and character into miniature form, studying the art of narrative economy and the innovative structures that make these brief stories resonate.
Wednesday
Micro Memoir
The fragmentary nature of memory lends itself beautifully to short forms. Drawing on personal experience, we will capture moments in time and learn how to distill experience into concise, emotionally resonant pieces that reveal universal truths.
Thursday
Creative Non-Fiction
We will take to the streets of Oxford in search of the factual and the fantastical. Building on techniques from earlier in the week, we will discover how to elevate non-fiction through storytelling craft and transform reportage into art.
Friday
Workshop and Reflection
Our final session brings everything together. We will share and discuss the work produced during the week, learning practical techniques for revision, editing, and polish. We will also explore opportunities for publication and consider next steps in your writing journey.
