In this lecture, Rob Stokes — first Minister for Active Transport in Australia, reflected on the political and policy challenges of championing walking and cycling infrastructure in a car-centric world. Drawing on experience from the frontlines of government, he shared strategies for persuading treasury officials of the economic value of active transport and techniques for building lasting community support. This is a timely and practical look at how to turn good ideas into real change on our streets.
About our speaker
Professor Rob Stokes is an urbanist, planning lawyer, and social housing advocate. He chairs Faith Housing Australia and several local and national Planning Panels. Rob is a director of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects; Museums of History NSW; and The Kings’ Foundation Australia.
A former NSW Minister for Public Spaces and Active Transport, Rob also served as Minister for Planning, Cities, Transport, Infrastructure, Education, and Environment.
He holds a PhD in planning law, has a MSc in Sustainable Urban Development from the University of Oxford, and is a life fellow of the Royal Australian Planning Institute.
