Daily schedule
Seminars meet each weekday morning after breakfast.
After lunch, afternoons are free for individual study or exploring the many places of interest in and around the city. Optional plenary excursions and social activities including walking tours will also be available.
The course fee includes breakfasts Monday-Saturday (residential guests only), lunches Sunday-Friday, and three-course dinners Sunday-Thursday. All meals are taken in Christ Church’s spectacular dining hall.
On Friday, there will be a special four-course gala dinner to celebrate the closing of the week.
Seminars and field trip
Monday seminars
The medieval garden and gardens of the Tudor and Stuart reigns, from survival to status symbol. The formal garden inspired by France and Italy.
Tuesday seminars
The Georgian garden. The rise of the aristocracy, the flowering of the English Landscape Garden and the reign of the famous, or infamous, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.
Wednesday seminars
The 19th century and unbridled opportunities. New wealth, new technologies and new plants from an expanding British Empire: everything needed to create the ‘perfect splendour’ of the Victorian garden and to enrage its opponents from the Arts and Crafts movement.
Thursday field trip
Visits will be made to Cliveden, a garden which has developed from 1666 to the present, and to Greys Court, a charming 20th century garden within the remains of a medieval castle.
Friday seminars
The 20th and 21st centuries. Everyman’s – and especially everywoman’s – garden in a democratic age of international communication.
Field trip
Destination: Cliveden and Greys Court (both National Trust)
