‘Who dunnit’, ‘how dunnit’ and ‘why dunnit’ are the three drivers of murder mysteries; a style of crime drama that often employs a range of recognisable genre elements. On this course, passion, jealousy and plain old mysterious circumstances meets higher education!
Many (very many!) murder mysteries have been set in Oxford. There is a style and feel to these that make them popular across the world. Now it’s your chance to plot a mystery to add to the Oxford body count! By the end of the week, you will know who killed your victim, for what motive, and have written a prose or script opening scene to share in our last class.
Using the colleges and city as inspiration, this is a workshop based creative writing course for students of any ability and experience. We will explore key creative writing skills needed to create a compelling murder mystery, be it ‘cosy’ or grisly! We will transform Oxford into our crime scene.
Students can work solo or in small groups. There will be sharing of ideas and writing in a supportive context and of course guessing who the murderer is! Writing might be for prose short story, screen or stage play.
This course is part of The Oxford Experience summer school, held at Christ Church.
