Ever wondered just why and when Americans moved from protesting the British state to rejecting it altogether? Or what the British really thought about the Americans actions? And what about the King: mad or just manipulated? Join this course to find out.
The American Revolution, undoubtedly one of the most significant events in modern history, is laden with epic symbolism, from George Washington’s heroism to the ‘madness’ of King George III.
At the heart of this narrative is the compelling idea of this revolution as particularly special: a national fight for freedom, liberty-seeking Americans emerging triumphant against the forces of British tyranny. Yet for all the power of this image, the reality was rather more complex, and the divide rather less clear, as we shall discover in examining Anglo-American politics in the 1760s and its evolving, and fascinating, nature.
