Seminars and field trip
Monday seminars
War is declared, but why?
Our first session will explore the breakdown in relations between King and Parliament from 1625 to 1642. Why was Charles so adamant that he was capable of ruling without any democratic checks, and how did people from different levels of society try to resist him?
Tuesday seminars
Petitioners and Pensioners: who were the soldiers of the Civil Wars?
This session will explore the events of the Civil Wars of 1642 to 1651 through the words of the people who actually fought them. We will study petitions submitted by maimed soldiers and war widows to understand how these conflicts impacted society and connect with this period of history on a very human level.
Wednesday seminars
Killing a King.
Our third session will explore one of the most constitutionally significant moments in British history – the trial and execution of Charles I. Why had such a momentous step become necessary, and why did 1649 not mark the end of the Civil Wars?
Thursday seminars
Field Trip.
Excursion to the Weston Library to view some manuscript material dating from the Civil War period.
Friday seminars
The Legacy of Revolution.
Our final session will explore the ways the Civil Wars are remembered – or ignored – in modern society. How did this conflict change the nature of monarchy and democracy, and why has there been such a drastic decline in cultural commemoration of this time period?
