The focus of Bittersweet Shakespeare is two of Shakespeare’s comedies: Much Ado About Nothing and Measure for Measure.
Much Ado is often thought of as the sunniest of Shakespeare’s plays, and Measure for Measure one of his darkest and most problematic. We’ll examine key scenes from both plays against the backdrop of the cultural, political and social worlds Shakespeare inhabited, using adaptations from stage and screen to inform our discussions.
Among the questions we’ll be exploring will be how two such different plays can both be called comedies, the role of women in courtship and marriage, and whether the ends justify the means when it comes to forging ‘happy endings.’
Together these plays show Shakespeare’s ingenuity as a comic playwright as he weaves together warring lovers, hilarious scenes of deception, bed-tricks, slander, heartbreak, sexual blackmail and life-or-death choices.
