Close reading will form a key element in this course, which will present you with the opportunity to examine a variety of illuminating and entertaining texts by both famous and less well-known Irish writers, sharing your insights and benefitting from those of others.
We will explore the recurrent and specific concerns Irish writers have sought to address over an extended period from 1914 to the present, identify the range of literary techniques they employ, and discover more about the historical, political and cultural contexts from which their work emerges.
When William Trevor was interviewed in 1989, he was asked to share his thoughts on the craft of the short story. ‘I think it is the art of the glimpse’, he replied. ‘It should be an explosion of truth. Its strength lies in what it leaves out just as much as what it puts in, if not more’.
This course is part of The Oxford Experience summer school, held at Christ Church.
