2026 marks the 150th anniversary of the first production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle at Bayreuth. Although it is arguably the greatest work of art conceived by a single individual, it is also one of the most controversial.
The main focus of the course will be on the music drama itself but its philosophical, political and mythological aspects will also be considered. All of these aspects of The Ring will be brought together in four sessions focussing on Die Walküre.
The course will be of equal interest to students who have experienced performances of Wagner but want to find out more, as it will be to those who know little of Wagner’s work but wish to understand some of the causes for controversy and debate.
This course is part of the Oxford University Summer School for Adults (OUSSA) programme.
