Seminars and field trip
Monday seminars
These enigmatic stories were used to transmit, explain and reflect on the cultural beliefs and values of the time. The myths of Hercules displayed the essential characteristics of the ideal male. By contrast a Greek understanding of the role and nature of women is set out in the troubling myth of Pandora.
Tuesday seminars
The adventures of Jason and his search for the Golden Fleece are a paradigm for man’s universal quest for adventure, triumph over adversity and the uncertainty of success.
The victories of Theseus exemplify and formulate the ideologies and politics of an emerging Athenian democracy.
Wednesday seminars
Homer’s epic poetry provided a template for almost every facet of Greek life. We shall analyse them to discover the Greek view of their own exquisite art.
Thursday seminars and field trip
The legend of ‘Lost Atlantis’ will be reviewed in relation to archaeology to discover to what extent myth preserves and transmits remembered history?
After lunch we visit Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum where we will view antiquities documenting and commenting on our subject.
Friday seminars
We conclude our course by examining the ideas of Freud, his fascination with these ancient stories, and his project to ‘excavate’ myth in order to explain the human mind.
