Students begin by exploring the fundamentals of hacking. Armed with this foundational knowledge, they delve into the realm of cyber terrorism, examining how extremists have not only adapted to, but flourished within the digital age. You will investigate the diverse techniques employed by extremists to further their agendas, from enabling lone wolf attacks to setting up online honey traps for cyber-espionage purposes.
The course then considers whether terrorists can inflict lethal consequences solely via hacking - such as manipulating pacemakers to malfunction or causing autonomous vehicles to crash.
Finally, students analyse the transformative role of artificial intelligence in enhancing hackers’ capabilities, as well as the benefits it confers to defenders. This insight equips them to evaluate the extent to which terrorism, hacking, and AI intersect to form a potentially dangerous triad.
This course is part of the Oxford University Summer School for Adults (OUSSA) programme.
