Do you want to learn more about the way stories work? Maybe you’ve tried to write a novel or two, but stalled because you lacked confidence, or simply didn’t know what happened next. In this course we’ll look at how to put together a plot that perfectly showcases our ideas, characters and themes. We’ll look at stories of different types, and consider what different readers find most satisfying to read and understand.
We will take the model of the three-act structure and look in detail at some points to consider within it, working through the moments generally found in a contemporary plot. Throughout the week you’ll build your novel idea into a plot outline, step by step, which will be discussed in one-on-one tutorials. By the end of the week, you’ll have a plot plan that works for you, and the confidence to go on and write your book. This course is for writers who have some experience in working with fiction, but who have perhaps not finished a full-length novel.
This course is part of the Oxford University Summer School for Adults (OUSSA) programme.
