Sculpture was to come to prominence in Britain during the immediate post-war decades, to an extent which had not been the case previously since the Victorian era. Yet, unlike their Victorian forebears, British sculptors of the 1940s and 50s could not rely on the established canon of post-renaissance neoclassical themes and visual styles. Instead, new ideals and stylistic templates were now percolating into Britain from Europe and the USA: notions of Modernist formal radicalism, and of tortuous and febrile emotional expressionism. This session will feature works by Lynn Chadwick, Eduardo Paolozzi and Anthony Caro.
