Richard Wagner’s “Ring” cycle

Overview

Even as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first complete performance, at Bayreuth in August 1876, Wagner's "Ring" cycle remains one of the greatest challenges in the operatic repertory.  For the performers it is, quite apart from anything else, an astonishing feat of stamina even before the issues of interpretation and the technical demands of the major roles are considered.  For the listener the task of taking in a work of these dimensions can be daunting and this day school aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the cycle.

The tutor, Dr Peter Copley, will look at the Ring’s genesis in Wagner's aesthetic and political ideals, literary interests and musical influences and explore important moments in each of the four operas, tracing the dramatic and musical connections between them. The principle of leitmotiv will be explained and the Wagner’s extensive use of leitmotiv as a musico-dramatic organising device will be explained.

Please note: this event will close to enrolments at 23:59 BST on 24 June 2026.
