Explore 10 ground-breaking moments in music history that changed how we listen, create and understand music. From classical to blues and rock, we will discover how innovation, culture and technology shaped music history.
This course will explore many powerful turning points in music history – moments in which music was not simply changed, but redefined what music could be. Whether you are a casual listener, a performer, or simply curious about the stories behind the music, this course invites you to explore how ground-breaking moments in music have challenged traditions, stirred controversy, and shaped culture.
Each session focuses on one pivotal event, idea, or composition, from the invention of musical notation to the riot at the premiere of The Rite of Spring, from the first blues recordings to the revolutionary sound of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
In addition to exploring what made each moment so ground-breaking, we will examine the shockwaves it sent through audiences, fellow composers, and our own understanding of music. We will uncover how artists, technologies and historical forces combined to push music in bold new directions.
No prior musical training is required, rather simply an interest in listening, learning and discovering how music connects with other stands of history. With guided listening, accessible discussions, and a wide range of musical styles, you will leave the course with a new perspective and a deeper understanding of how music made and makes history.
