Strategic Planning and Foresight: Learning from and Managing for the Future

Overview

This one-day workshop explores how you can plan more effectively in uncertain times, and what to do when prediction isn’t enough. You’ll learn how to use future-focused tools like visioning, foresight, trend analysis and scenario planning to prepare for what’s ahead and make more informed decisions.

The course looks at why traditional planning methods often fall short in today’s unpredictable world and introduces more flexible, forward-looking tools that support real-time responsiveness. You'll consider how to balance strategic thinking with action, and how to shift from reacting to events to actively shaping them.

Planning is still essential, even when the future feels unclear. From informal day-to-day decisions to global strategies, this workshop helps you understand how to use planning effectively, even when you can’t predict what’s coming next.

The aims of the workshop help you to:

  • Examine the importance and limitations of strategic planning.
  • Understand the difficulties of predicting the future in a turbulent world.
  • Explore how short-term thinking has endangered the wealth and health of many countries.
  • Take the long view to develop more enduring capability.
  • Consider destiny and fate.
  • Examine the distinctions between risk, chance and luck.
  • Create the foundations for organisational strategic thinking.
  • Explore futures strategies.
  • Examine forecasting methods and tools.
  • Undertake visioning strategies to see further into the darkness than other organisations.
  • Ensure that planning is effective and efficient.
  • Develop resilience capabilities to address unpredictable events.
  • Examine the neurological basis of daydreaming.
  • Encourage a culture of imagination, invention, innovation and creativity.
  • The workshop will provide a toolbox of ideas and strategies which can be applied in the workplace.
