Daily schedule
After registration on Sunday afternoon, we invite you to a welcome meeting in the Amersi Lecture Theatre in New Quad, where you will meet your tutors. Join us in Deer Park afterwards for our opening drinks reception, followed by dinner in Brasenose’s historic dining hall (informal dress).
Seminars take place on weekday mornings. Most afternoons are free, allowing you time to explore Oxford, enjoy a variety of optional social events (see details below), or to sit back and relax in one of the college's atmospheric quads.
Your course culminates on Friday evening with a closing drinks reception and gala farewell dinner at which Certificates of Attendance are awarded. For this special occasion smart dress is encouraged (no requirement to wear dinner suits or gowns).

Seminars and field trip
Monday
Introduction: Signals from Space
Today’s seminars set the foundation for the week, helping you understand how astronomers observe, interpret, and decode the universe.
You begin your cosmic adventure by exploring the vast scales of space and time that define our universe. From the tiniest particles to the largest galaxy clusters, you’ll gain a sense of just how immense and interconnected the cosmos truly is. You'll also learn how we gather knowledge about the universe through signals from space, including light, radio waves, and other cosmic messengers that reveal the secrets of distant stars and galaxies.
Tuesday
The Solar System: Our Cosmic Neighbourhood
Journey through our celestial backyard, beginning with Earth as a planet and the sun as a star, before exploring the diverse worlds that share our solar system.
- Discover the rocky inner planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, and learn what makes them unique.
- Venture outwards to meet the gas and ice giants: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune with their fascinating moons and rings.
- Discuss what modern missions and telescopes have revealed about the formation and evolution of our Solar System.
Wednesday
The Lives and Deaths of Stars
Today, we turn our gaze beyond the Solar System to explore stars, the building blocks of galaxies.
- Learn how stars form, shine, and evolve, uncovering the balance of forces that keeps them alive.
- Examine the different types of stars and how their size determines their fate.
- Discover the spectacular ways stars die, as white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes, and learn what these remnants teach us about space and time.
Thursday
Field Trip to the National Space Centre, Leicester
Experience astronomy in action with a full-day visit to the UK National Space Centre where you’ll explore interactive exhibits, witness spacecraft technology up close, and immerse yourself in the wonders of space exploration. You will have time to enjoy the planetarium’s immersive shows, learn about the latest space missions, and gain a new perspective on how scientific curiosity drives our reach for the stars.
Friday
Exoplanets, Extraterrestrial Life, and the Fate of the Universe
Conclude your cosmic journey by exploring some of the most exciting frontiers of modern astronomy.
- Discover the thousands of exoplanets that orbit distant stars, and how astronomers detect them.
- Discuss the ongoing search for extraterrestrial life, including insights from the Breakthrough Listen initiative at Oxford.
- Explore galaxies, dark matter, and dark energy, and what these phenomena tell us about the ultimate fate of the universe.
