A series of lectures and creative workshops for writers of any experience wishing to understand how characters interact, reveal thoughts and motives and advance the story through what they say. Developing convincing voices for characters is a key writing skill for script writers and prose fiction and non-fiction writers.
This course will explain the challenges – and how to overcome them – of writing dialogue in a variety of genres, from contemporary-set dramas to historical fiction. Classes will consist of tutor input, reading and watching prose and drama extracts, discussion and solo writing activities.
It is hoped that different ‘voices’ created in the week can be combined into a shared reading in class on the final day. All work will take place in a supportive atmosphere and all sharing of original ideas and peer critiquing is voluntary, but encouraged!
Please note that while students might refer to previous writing they have done, there is no space to critique work already written. This course is about exploring essential writing skills and techniques together and creating characters who are ‘born’ at the start of the week and who interact as rich and complete characters on Friday.
This course is part of The Oxford Experience summer school, held at Christ Church.
