Scriptwriting is hugely popular and at the heart of dramatic writing, whether it’s for film, television, stage, or radio (and beyond). This creative and critical online course will introduce you to the art of writing scripts, from generating ideas and thinking about your audience to structural building blocks and polishing and pitching your work. In addition to exploring writing techniques, you will also look critically at fascinating examples of dramatic writing, and better learn to understand, enjoy and learn from the work of established scriptwriters.
The approach of this course is both creative and critical. After a methodological introduction, you will learn several key elements of successful script writing, including structure, characterisation, dialogue, and more, and be shown how to employ these in your own work. You will also acquire a greater understanding of the four main media for scripts (stage, radio, television, and film), as well as insights into genre and adaptation. This course is for anyone who wants to learn more about scripts, and practice writing them, in an environment that is supportive and inspirational.
This course emphasises weekly reading and writing exercises, peer feedback, and tutor guidance. Tutors prompt and moderate discussions that centre on group learning rather than workshopping personal pieces of writing. Both assessed assignments receive detailed feedback from the tutor.
