Oxford academics shortlisted for national award for Civil War learning programme

Dr Ismini Pells, Course Director for the Advanced Diploma in Local History, and Professor Andy Hopper, Course Director for the MSt in Historical Studies, have been shortlisted for Learning Programme of the Year at the Museums and Heritage Awards for their work on a major learning project exploring the British Civil Wars.

The World Turned Upside Down is a collaborative project that brings the history of the British Civil Wars to life for schools and wider audiences. Developed through a partnership between academics, teachers and museum professionals, the free programme combines historical research with creative teaching approaches to make a complex period more accessible and engaging.

The project includes a range of resources, from an illustrated book and podcast series to an online learning platform, all designed to support teaching and spark students' curiosity about the past.

Dr Ismini Pells and Professor Andy Hopper are co-editors of The World Turned Upside Down learning programme and have worked in partnership with the National Civil War Centre to develop its content.

The Museums and Heritage Awards celebrate innovation and excellence across museums, galleries and heritage organisations worldwide. This year’s shortlist includes leading institutions such as the Natural History Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum and Jane Austen’s House. The award ceremony will take place in London on 13 May 2026.
