Biography

Charles Boyle is Assistant Director of the Department and Director of Professional and Open Access Courses. He leads programmes in business, management, technology, and AI, and is responsible for the Department’s portfolio of summer schools, short bespoke courses, weekend and day events, and the Foundations of Diplomacy pre-Master’s course.

He works closely with Oxford University Press, supporting initiatives such as the Oxford Teachers’ Academy professional development courses for English language teachers, and the Oxford Test of English suite of online English language proficiency tests.

An experienced educator, he has taught English to international students, trained language teachers, and presented on course design and language assessment at conferences worldwide. He authored resources for the award-winning Campaign: English for the Military series (Macmillan, 2005–2006) and co-authored English for Law Enforcement (Macmillan, 2009), winner of the David Riley Award for Innovation in Business English and ESP.

Charles has lived and worked in Switzerland, Sweden, Russia, Hungary and the Middle East, and has provided consultancy for the UK Ministry of Defence, the FCDO, the British Council, and NATO.

His current work focuses on supporting adult learners in digital environments, with particular emphasis on accessibility and inclusive pedagogy. Through flexible teaching approaches, scaffolded support, and adaptive technologies, he helps learners develop digital confidence, independence, and engagement.

Charles holds a PGDip in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (Distinction) from the University of Oxford, an MSc in Digital Education (Distinction) from the University of Edinburgh and is a Fellow of Kellogg College and the UK Higher Education Academy.
