Niall ÓhUallacháin

Student spotlight details

Pharmacist Niall ÓhUallacháin came to the MSc in Experimental and Translational Therapeutics with a desire to strengthen his expertise in the field of therapeutic development and innovation, in a formal learning setting.

I am a Pharmacist by profession, from Dublin, Ireland, currently working as a Medical Advisor in the pharmaceutical industry. My scientific interests are primarily in oncology therapeutic development, with a particular focus on immuno-oncology agents.

My Oxford journey began one day while reading an article in the New England Journal of Medicine about a novel therapeutic platform. This sparked my interest in the biological and pharmacological rationale behind the platform’s design. What began as casual reading soon evolved into a deep dive that eventually brought me to the course page for the MSc in Experimental and Translational Therapeutics.

As I read through the course description, it quickly became clear that this programme would be ideal for expanding my knowledge of drug and advanced therapeutic development. What started as a curiosity in a therapeutic modality metamorphosed into a desire to engage in formal learning to strengthen my expertise and feed my curiosity in the field of therapeutic development and innovation.

Initially, balancing a full-time job alongside the programme proved challenging. There were times I missed university emails and had to issue a few tardy replies (apologies to the course administration team!). Thankfully, the programme coordinators were extremely supportive and fully aware of the many demands placed on working professionals. Their flexibility and encouragement made all the difference.

This programme has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The highlight has undoubtedly been the people I met along the way. I have never had the privilege nor pleasure of meeting a more inspiring band of people. Everyone on this course, from lecturers to peers, has helped me grow in so many ways. This course challenged my thinking, broadened my perspective, and cultivated my passion for science and research.

Undoubtedly, this course fosters a community of like-minded, curious, and driven individuals who inspire one another to pursue their interests with passion. It cultivates intellectual curiosity, and I felt encouraged to explore new ideas and expand my learning horizons.

Every aspect of this course has, and continues to have, a positive impact on my career. In particular, my dissertation topic stands out as a key milestone in my career development. The subject was relatively novel, and researching and writing about it deepened my enthusiasm for that therapeutic modality. This combination of a strong academic foundation and genuine personal passion creates a powerful synergy. It not only demonstrates my commitment to the field but also showcases the calibre and depth of the work I can deliver.

I plan to continue working in the pharmaceutical industry, though the siren call of a DPhil is never far from my mind! My ultimate goal is to transition into a role that is focused on the development of new therapeutic assets. Ideally, I would like to work at a strategic level, evaluating evidence, both preclinical and clinical, to decide which assets a biopharma company would develop.

If you're considering applying to Oxford, without any hesitation, I would say apply. Before starting this course, I only had a vague idea of where I wanted my career to go. My Oxford journey has inspired me, refined my focus and helped crystallise my research and career interests. The teaching and knowledge I have gained have been transformative and emboldened me both personally and professionally. And honestly, what’s the worst that could happen if you apply? You could get accepted to the University of Oxford.
