After millennia of slow evolutionary growth, shortly after 2000 BCE Minoan Crete experienced the rise of a sophisticated society, which has been characterised as the first advanced civilisation in Europe. The course will explore the several massive building complexes and refined, luxurious and elaborate art (fine vases in stone and pottery, gold, bronze and crystal objects, seals, frescoes) that have been left behind, which help us reconstruct the character of Minoan society and its practices.
We will also look at the trading outposts that were established by the Minoans, the cultural influence of whom became particularly intense in the Cycladic islands, as witnessed by the extraordinarily well-preserved Minoan-style frescoes on the island of Thera (Santorini), and survey the myths, such as Theseus and Adriane, Daedalus and the Minotaur, which belong to the cultural heritage of the whole Western world.
This course also includes a visit to the Ashmolean Museum to examine the Minoan artefacts it holds.
This course is part of The Oxford Experience summer school, held at Christ Church.
