The course offers an overview of the political, cultural, artistic and everyday life in Constantinople, the most glorious capital in Europe in the Middle Ages.
With the exception of a few religious leaders, no other individual apart from Alexander the Great has captured the imagination to the extent that he has, becoming an example to world rulers and also the hero of numerous legends in various cultures.
Examine the artistic life (architecture, mosaics, icons, manuscripts) in the Byzantine empire (4-15th c.), analyse its symbolism, assess the institutions that supported its flourishing, and survey the political and religious ideologies that influenced it.
This course will provide an examination of the cities and society, rituals and religion, art and technology, daily life and trade, and death and burial in the Minoan world.
Investigating the significant role the Orthodox Church played in the life of the Byzantine Empire, we will discuss its development, spiritual and political power, role in diplomacy, differences with the Church of Rome, and influence on Byzantine art.
The course will offer an overview of the everyday life and culture of the Byzantine empire. Topics will include the social structure, commerce and industry, monasticism, family life, public welfare, the role of women, food and drink, education.
