The language of Old English poetry and prose continues to delight. The moving verse of Beowulf, the nuanced and subtle poetry of The Wanderer, and the controlled rhetoric of Aelfric illustrate a mastery of form as well as linguistic power and beauty.
Middle English is the language of Chaucer, the Gawain poet and Julian of Norwich. Rich in texture and meaning, Middle English literature offers new and surprising perspectives on the medieval world.
Responses to the natural world are everywhere in the literature and art of the Middle Ages. We will explore bestiaries, the forests of romance, the landscapes of dream vision and the calendar pages of Books of Hours.
Best known for The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer's earlier work takes us to the fantastical worlds of dream vision and philosophical romance. We’ll explore 'The Book of the Duchess', 'The House of Fame', 'The Parliament of Fowls' and 'Troilus and Criseyde'.
